COURSE MANAGER’S REPORT
Some welcome rain last weekend helped get last week's application of feed and wetting agent into the soil and the greens have reacted well. We are still cutting at 3.5mm to reduce stress to the putting surfaces and hand watering each day and the greens have certainly benefited from this. The pace of the greens could be quicker but I'm prioritising the health of the greens before anything else especially as we are now again in the middle of another hot spell. We had hoped to utilise the turf iron to help with the pace of the greens but unfortunately this has another breakdown and is waiting for repair, it's an on-going problem due to the age of the machine but hopefully back up and running soon.
The rest of the course continues to struggle in hot dry conditions with no irrigation, so the mowers have again remained in the sheds this week. The rough is getting untidy as I wait for solutions with this to become available. We continue to divot the tees but there isn't much recovery from daily play. The furniture, including bins and ball washers, continues to be maintained. Whilst the opportunity has been there to get other work done, we have dug out the paths on the 2nd and 3rd tee and completed these areas laying down more bark chips, giving it a smarter and more natural look. The lads have also been busy starting work on the short play area. George, the apprentice, is overseeing this as part of his college project. George has got a qualified sprayer to apply a selective herbicide to the area and helped Ryan and Martin start work on the 2 bunkers he is looking to re-build. I look forward to seeing this progress.
The bunkers have been raked each day this week with sand moved around and weeds removed and new holes have been cut and moved away from stressed out areas. I have finally got round to putting up the bunker sheet in the club house. Please comment in the boxes which bunker and any problems e.g no sand, too much sand etc. We will check the sheet and address any problems at the earliest opportunity. Thanks.
You may have noticed Ben hasn't been around this week, he has proudly been representing Penn up at the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club supporting the greenkeeping team. Hopefully he’s had a great experience and will come back with some fresh ideas for Penn.
Monday morning, we had a visit from Hayley Dorrington, who works at Highgate Common who met with myself, Paul Stanyer and Andy Allen to give us some specialist advice on the gorse and heather management around the course. This was very interesting and will help myself and the sapling group improve areas around the golf course.
I was pleased to hear that the Lady Captain's charity day went very well on Monday with lots of money raised for charity. I had good feedback about the course and was glad to hear that members were proud to say they were members of this club. This has always been my main aim, to produce a course that the members can be proud of. I will pass all feedback back to my team.
After last week's request to return fairway mats I have had 1 back (thanks Bob) out of the 100 we have missing. Please remember to return any you may have accidentally taken home or left in your bag.
Enjoy your weekend. ????
Dave.
