Beaumont Match -Thursday 2nd May
Seniors County Knockout Progress
Eight members of Gorleston’s senior section played in the 1st Round of the Beaumont under the captaincy of Paul Gee at Woodbridge. A tough challenge for the 1st round of this competition!

Paul was meticulous in his arrangements for the day, including arranging a practice visit for those that could make it a week before we played. Paul choosing not to play himself but instead “Ryder Cup style” motivate the team from a buggy during the match.

The practice day was dull, wet and cold but gave those attending an understanding of the course. Paul ensuring those that played at the practice were paired with those unable to attend, so the knowledge gained was shared, to partly offset the home advantage of the Woodbridge team.

For the match, we had superb warm sunny conditions, with only a light breeze but MUCH faster greens, which the home team exploited to their advantage on the early holes, whilst the Gorleston players adjusted their putting.

As the day progressed, Paul briefed all groups regularly, stressing that with the “Hambro style” scoring, those teams that were winning needed to keep focus and accrue more winning holes, to offset others finding their opponents more challenging.
The games were played competitively, but with good spirit in each match.

Overall result was two GGC pairings won by 7 holes and 4 holes, whilst the other two pairings lost by 4 holes and 2 holes, so a net result of GGC being 5 holes to the good and progressing to the next round, which is a home match against Newton Green on the 6th June.
