May 2024 Newsletter
Newyddion Clwb
Dear member,

We are pleased to announce that moving forwards our monthly newsletter will be a joint effort form the Club and the Resort - the Formby Hall Golf Team. Here is the first one…enjoy!

The club has been a busy place since we last wrote to you at the end of March.

We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation and patience during a busy period of membership renewals. It’s a busy time of year and adds to the work load for the lads in the Golf shop so it really is appreciated.

Unfortunately, there are still a small number who are yet to renew. Please may we remind you that if you are yet to renew, this must be done before the 5th May 2024. If you chose not to renew, you will be classed as leaver on the system, meaning if you wish to join again in the future you would be applying as a new member and liable to pay a full joining fee.

If you are having issues renewing, we do offer a holder membership which is £100 for the year. Taking this option before the closing date would mean you retain your membership but just lose playing rights for the year. Then you would be eligible to renew as a full member again for next year. For more information on this please contact the Golf shop.

April started with our annual Easter Cup. Congratulations to our Ladies Vice Captain Laura Des Landes who swept all before her.

There was also, organised by the ladies, their ‘Easter Bunny Hop’, this was won by Steve O’Brien, Martin Brown, Damien Marlowe and Paul Birch.

Our new Club shirts were on display in early April versus the Lancashire Super Seniors. Unfortunately the match was lost 3.5 to 2.5 but our members gave a great account of themselves, thank you to them all for representing the club with distinction. If you are interested in purchasing a club shirt please get in touch with me.

April also saw our first gents friendly of the year. Ten members, again donning our new club shirt played at Southport Old Links on Friday 19th April. The team played well but eventually lost 3.5 to 1.5. The return match should also be a tight affair later in the season (date TBC).

Our next friendly is against Huyton and Prescot on Wednesday 29th May at 15.30 here and away on Tuesday 25th June at 13.00pm.

Penwortham A Fri 28th June 10.40am.

Penwortham H Thu 28th July 15.00pm.

Houghwood H Tue 6th August 15.00pm.

Houghwood A Thu 5th September 13.00pm.

Are our other friendlies.

If you would like to play in any of our friendlies please contact;

On Wednesday 24th April 2024 there was a Shotgun team Texas Scramble to raise money for ‘The Dhekelia Bear Lady’ with food afterwards. This was a success enjoyed by all members who were able to participate and raised around £2000 for the charity.

Congratulations to Pete Sampara, The Dales Trophy winner, the first gents major of the season, he was run by Bob Hale.

Well done also to Joe Hogan, winner of the Seniors first major of the season, the Dave Adkin Trophy.

On Sunday 28th April, our mixed SDGA team took on Ormskirk golf Club at Formby Hall and were resounding 4-1 winners. A great start to the squad, organised by Jackie Speariett.

Course news

This may be a surprise to many, but lately we have had some on course issues which need to be addressed. I am confident that the majority of members would always endeavour to follow the rules of golf as well as ensuring our golf course is treated with respect. However, we have had some incidents that are really concerning, and we are hoping we can all come together to prevent these happening.

1. Bunker Faces

We have had several incidents where bunker faces are being severely damaged.

The evidence shows that in a lot of cases this looks intentional with people climbing up the front of the bunker face to exit. If anyone is seen doing this, they will face disciplinary action and if anyone witness’s this happening please call the Pro shop immediately.

2. Moving of Tee markers

In recent weeks we have had people taking it upon themselves to move the Tee markers of the day, not only on general play days but also in competitions. Please note that not only is this forbidden, but it will also void any competition results on the day.

If anyone is unsure about the upcoming remeasurement process, and/or has concerns about where the tee markers are being placed, please contact the golf team for clarification, rather than moving tee markers.

We are striving to take our club forward and improve every day. Please join us in making this possible. If anyone has any issues or doesn’t understand the above, please contact David via email golfmanager@formyhallgolfresort.co.uk

- Please could we remind members to not take their trolley on the tees, we must at all times be thoughtful to look after our course.

On that note I would be remiss of us not to thank Bobby Phenna and Dave McDougall for their relentless hard work on the course, I am sure we represent all members when we say it really is appreciated.

-Divot bags - Please respect our course. One way of doing this is by taking a divot bag (from the pro shop). Filling it at the various tee boxes and replacing divots as you make your way around the course, it is all our responsibility to look after our course.
